Why your Wi-Fi is slow at home (and what to try first)

Before you buy new gear, try these calm, practical checks — most slow Wi-Fi in Hobart homes comes down to a few common causes.

Slow Wi-Fi is one of the most common calls I get across greater Hobart — and the fix is often simpler than people expect.

Start with the basics

First, note where the problem happens. Is it only in one room, one device, or the whole house? That tells us whether we're dealing with coverage, a single faulty device, or something upstream like your NBN connection.

Restart your router and NBN box (if you have one). Wait two minutes, then test again near the router. If speed is fine there but poor in a back bedroom, it's usually a coverage issue — not a "bad internet plan" issue.

Router placement matters

Especially in older Hobart homes

In older Hobart homes with thick walls or multiple storeys, router placement makes a huge difference. A router tucked in a cupboard or at the far end of the house will struggle. Try a central, elevated spot with clear line of sight to main living areas.

When to call a technician

If you've tried the basics and still get dropouts, slow speeds, or devices that won't stay connected, an on-site visit can save hours of guesswork. I check your NBN setup, Wi-Fi coverage, and devices — and explain everything in plain English before recommending new hardware.
